When it comes to Federal Grants, there are many different grants. FSEOG is one popular grant program that is awarded by the government.
FSEOG - The ‘Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant’ is a financial aid program that is awarded to the qualified students to cover their post-secondary education cost and only the undergraduate students are eligible for this grant. This program has been designed to help the students who belong to the low-income families.
This is free money that the students do not need to pay back to the government. In order to apply for this grant program, one needs to file in a FAFSA application. Based on the information provided by the students, their candidacy is evaluated and they are informed about the approval or disapproval of their grant.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant program was introduced in 1966, and till date, it has awarded millions of dollars to the student community.
The FSEOG program comes just after the ‘Pell Grant’ program.

The selection committee of the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant also considers EDC, the ‘Expected Family Contribution’ of the applicants. This is the same formula created by the Congress to assess the candidacy of the applicants for various federal grants. The net income, family size and assets all counts in the Expected Family Contribution by the authorities of FSEOG.
The recipients of the Federal Pell Grant face no problems for getting the funds from the FSEOG program. The amount of money a student receives through the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant also depends on the policies of the particular school they are attending. The amount of money can be as low as $500 and as high as $4000 for the FSEOG approved students.
Note here that the application process of the FSEOG program is much more competitive than the Federal Pell Grant program and this financial aid is awarded only to the students who demonstrate dire financial need.
If a student is approved for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, then the grant money is either credited to their school account or they may get paid directly through check or bank account.
So, do not delay your FAFSA application if you want to take advantage of the FSEOG for your studies as delaying will only result in your loss.
